The numerous stylistic exchanges between France and Japan, of which Yokohama was one of the points of entry, allowed Western artists to experiment with elongated vertical formats inspired by Japanese kakemono. Examples can be found in Pierre Dubreuil's photograph "Le Benedicite" (1902) or in Pierre Bonnard's painting "L'Enfant au Paté de Sable" (1904). "Promenade" follows in this formal tradition by adopting this elongated vertical format.
